This is a fossil compound (colonial) coral, genus Hexagonaria, common in the Traverse formation. The attractive appearance of the Petoskey stone is due to the internal structure of the coral. Each individual coral, or corallite, forms a rough hexagonal pattern. As the name suggests, agates are commonly found here, but it’s also a promising spot for finding Yooperlites. Miners Beach: Part of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan, Miners Beach has sandy and pebbly areas ideal for rock hunting. The chances of finding a Dunkleosteus in the quarry of Rockport are rare, but this king of the Devonian sea deserves an honorable mention.
